I’ve literally lost count of the number of people who have asked me “Why can’t I lose weight?’. They are exercising regularly, eating healthy food and are doing everything they ‘should’.

When I have my first consultation call with a client I ask them to describe a typical day. Many people tell me a ‘good day’ and a ‘bad day’. Of course, there is no such thing. No food is ‘bad’ and equally no food is ‘good’. If we think like this it indicates that we need an overhaul of our diet mindset. If, like me, you’ve been on countless diets over the years then we’ve absorbed a lot of information. We then get confused and start cherry picking from the ones we like – normally those that ‘allow’ some alcohol, bread, chocolate etc. We are very discerning!

Why I abhor the word diet.

I abhor the ‘D’ word. It’s failed me too many times. We go ‘on’ and ‘off’ diets. I will never forget a client that I worked with in the early days of setting up my business. I used to ask people to list their six favourite foods and drinks. She did two. One listed chicken, salads, roasted veggies, prawn stir fries etc and the other list was wine, cake, biscuits, crisps…

She told me that the ‘good’ list was when she was being ‘good’ – and she really did enjoy this type of food. The ‘bad’ list was what she reverted to when she was feeling so deprived and ‘off’ the diet. I was so grateful for her honesty and shared with her that it struck a chord. Do you recognise this? It’s very common!

If we don’t ‘demonise’ food and embrace a healthy eating plan that will make us feel energised and happy and in control then we will never hit another Monday morning when we tell ourselves ‘THIS IS IT.’

Losing weight is always considered to be difficult – and I appreciate that it can be. My six week programme is full on. Accountability is key. I set my business up because I wanted someone to care as much about my weight loss as I did. I didn’t want my husband or daughter asking me “should you be eating that”. It would have driven me mad – and to the biscuit tin!

Let’s eat for energy and for joy and for good health.

Myth Busting

You CAN lose weight but we need to be focused and lose some of the myths. For example, avocados, nuts and coconut oil are some of the ‘wonder foods’ that people are currently being seduced by. They absolutely play a good part in healthy eating, but not when you’re trying to lose unwanted poundage! By adding a ‘healthy’ tablespoon of coconut oil, either in cooking or as a dressing, you are increasing the calorie value of that meal by at least 120 calories. By snacking on a handful of nuts then add at least 350 calories. Half an avocado will bump up the value by a good 175 calories. We can introduce these foods- in limitation – once we have got to the weight we want to be.

And drinking water is an important part of your weight loss plan. Read more of my thoughts on water here

I not only support people to lose weight – I also support them to keep it off. For good.
